Our Heritage & Mission
A Family Legacy Since 1885
The McMartin Herd traces its Shorthorn roots to 1885, founded by Finlay McMartin in southeast Minnesota. The herd operated for generations near Claremont, Minnesota in Dodge County, most recently moving and consolidating operations near Dennison, Minnesota, in 2019.
Today, the herd is run by Justin McMartin with guidance from Peter McMartin, continuing a family enterprise that has remained unbroken through generations. Finlay's descendants have continued Shorthorn breeding, showing cattle at regional fairs and maintaining registered cattle. The McMartin name has been associated with numerous prizewinning Shorthorn cattle across the decades.
Our Commitment
The McMartins remain committed to their passion of breeding exceptional cattle and promoting the Shorthorn breed. We raise honest cattle with proven genetics through sustainable, ethical breeding practices that prioritize animal welfare and genetic excellence.
Our Active Herd
Browse our current breeding stock and herd members. Since we run a small operation we are forced to select only our very best to keep back or sell to other breeders. Most of the photos below show the cattle in their "working state" mostly because Justin and Peter are terrible at taking pictures.
Genetics
Our breeding program focuses on passing down genetic traits of structural soundness, fertility, and docile temperament.
Health & Wellness
As most small breeders know, every animal is part of the family and receives the best care we can provide with annual vaccination, high quality diet, and other routine care.
Availability
We regularly have open and bred females available year-round and bulls or steers available in the fall. Contact us to discuss your specific needs and available animals.
